This is High Street, Old Portsmouth, taken from Battery Row about 1920.

Sightseers view the Square Tower and the horse and cart is parked outside what was then the Bell Tavern.

The pub dates from the 18th century but was converted to residential use in the 1920s.

In the 19th century a Mr Sherwood ran a gunsmiths business from the shop on the far right and his shooting gallery was used for practice by one of the participants of the last duel fought between Englishmen in England, at Browndown, Gosport, in 1845.
