NOSTALGIA: Health inspectors would have had a field day at this Portsmouth butcher’s

Have your say

You’ll have to forgive a little self-indulgence and our own trip down memory lane today. For this is the last weekday copy of The News to have been produced by journalists at The News Centre, Hilsea.

After almost 44 years, the blinking cursors on newsroom computers were tonight fading for good as another chapter in The News’s 136-year history drew to a close.

But over the weekend a fresh era will begin as we move a short distance to Lakeside, North Harbour. It will be only the third proper newsroom in our history.

Older readers will remember our former city centre HQ in Stanhope Road, from where we moved to Hilsea in 1969.

It is estimated that more than 1,000 journalists have passed through the newsroom at The News Centre and today’s Remember When is dedicated to them.
