NOSTALGIA: Ghostly sightings of Portsmouth frigate lost in snowstorm 140 years ago

Have your say

Brian Long of Lightfoot Lawn, Eastney, dropped me a line about the army at Hilsea and sent me a photo of the triumphant Royal Army Ordnance Corps team in 1960.

The pitch was across the Copnor Road on land now occupied by Rugby Camp and the Roko gym.

One of the team, Swain, played for Manchester City; Bamforth for Aston Villa, and Osmond for Pompey.

The soldiers won the league with a resounding 13-1 thrashing of the RAF at Thorney Island with Brian scoring four of the goals.

All of these service teams, I believe, are now defunct and come under the United Services team but I stand to be corrected.

Only Collingwood and Sultan are still named bases.
