The new owners of South Parade Pier are canvassing for ideas on the structure’s future uses, so let’s take a look back at what was going on there in the past.

The new owners of South Parade Pier are canvassing for ideas on the structure’s future uses, let’s take a look back at what was going on there in the past.

The photo below shows the pier shortly after its completion in 1910, when taking a rowboat into the water was very much in vouge.

The pier was always a popular music venue, and in the bottom left is a programme for a 1938 concert starring Ambrose And His Orchestra.

To the left we have a shot of the end of the pier in the 1960s, crowded for a Miss Southsea competition, which the sign above the stage says was sponsored by The News.

Below that we have a picture of the pier from August, 1982, with signs advertising a ‘midsummer madness’ Christmas party, a weekly summer happening.

Finally, on the opposite page we see the ‘old’ South Parade Pier before its turn-of-the-centry rebuild, itself a popular venue for events.
