NOSTALGIA: We had more backbone during the war

Have your say

Harry Surrey wants his memory jogged and wonders if readers can help.

And before you read on, can you spot the son of a celebrated Pompey star in this picture?

This is the Portsmouth De Havilland Apprentices football team from 1961 and he can remember all the names bar one.

The picture was taken before his side took on their De Havilland counterparts from Christchurch at Moneyfields Lane, Copnor, Portsmouth.

Harry said: ‘If memory serves me well I think it was 1961 and we won the match 5-0 with centre forward John Collins getting all the goals.’

These are the names. Can you supply the missing one?

Back row (l to r): Len Durant, Sid Hillman, ?, Mel Hoskins, Roy LeClerq, Brian Winslade, Harry Surrey, Graham Rand, L. Scourfield, Reg Andrews.

Front: John Newman, Derek Martin, John Collins, Derek Banting, Cliff Parker.

Harry added: ‘Cliff’s dad (also Cliff) was, of course, the scorer of two goals in Pompey’s 4-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1939 F.A Cup Final.’
