The new shopping centre, Cascades, was opened in September 1989 by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Gladys Howard.

The centre was built on a car park that was behind Woolworth’s and C&A (remember them?) and which had been housing until the blitz of 1940-41.

Cascades was, and still is, the largest indoor shopping centre in Portsmouth.
