On this day in 1933 nine people appeared before Portsmouth police court accused of staging a cock fight in a city rifle range.

According to witnesses, cocks were fitted with sharp steel spurs and set to fight against each other.

They said one bird suffered 20 puncture wounds, an injured eye and blood poured from its head and neck.

All but one of the defendants were convicted and fined – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
