Not some far flung island but Port Creek alongside Eastern Road, Portsmouth, earlier this week. I counted more than 50 plastic bottles along with other man-made filth.

The recent picture of Kate Bryant standing outside Portsmouth’s bombed Royal Hospital on April 26, 1941, prompted Eddie Wallace to dig out this photograph.

It was taken on January 11 that year – the day after the city’s most devastating air raid.

Eddie reminds us that several male nurses, a special constable and a doctor were killed.
