THIS WEEK IN 1971: ‘Meeting in Southsea backs postak strike’

Have your say

How many of you remember the ‘Father Christmas Bus’?, wonders Phyllis Sawford.

That’s her on the right in this picture from The News in December, 1987.

She and her husband Denis were out walking with their grandchildren, three-year-old twins Michelle and Rachel, on Southsea seafront when they received this greeting from Santa.

The man in the red coat and white whiskers was bus driver Harry Hutchings, 48, of Walmer Road, Fratton.

The bus, decorated for the festive season, belonged to the old Portsmouth Passenger Transport department.

Phyllis, of Heyshott Road, Southsea, can’t believe how time has flown – Michelle and Rachel now have children of their own.
