In this moving photograph from 1928 we see friends and relations of sailors about to depart in the heavy cruiser HMS Suffolk from Portsmouth Dockyard.
In the foreground a sailor can be seen hugging his sweetheart.
I wonder how long he was away for?
There is one thing wrong with the original caption for the photograph – it claims that it was June.
With the sailors in sea jerseys and black tops to their caps it can only be a winter scene.
Also, all the women are wearing winter coats.
Whatever, it is a lovely scene re-enacted so many hundreds of times on Portsmouth’s dockyard jetties over the years.
