On July 22, 1929, the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor J Smith, opened the renovated and widened Fratton Road.

From a narrow, greatly congested and dangerous thoroughfare with only a single line of tramway for most of the way, it had been converted into a first class, 50ft wide road.

All the houses and shops on the east side were set back in order for the work to take place.

In this picture the civic procession can be seen in the distance making its way steadily towards Fratton Bridge.
