On this day in 1957 a service was held at Milton cemetery when the remains of up to 2,000 people were re-interred after being exhumed from land that had formerly been St Mary’s graveyard at Highbury Street, Old Portsmouth.

The land was needed for an extension of the power station – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
