On this day in 1962 the ferry service to Hayling Island was taken over by Portsmouth Corporation.

The following month a proposal by a private company to construct a chairlift across the entrance of Langstone Harbour to connect the city to Hayling was dropped – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
