I hope Engel can be a winner at Eurovision

A draft plan showing the proposed new town at Whiteley

THIS WEEK IN 1983: Sweeping plans unveiled for Hampshire’s newest town

Have your say

I see that 75-year-old Engelbert Humperdinck has been chosen as Britain’s Eurovision Song Contest entrant.

Most of the ‘hip’ radio stations have been taking the mick out of him, but I wonder just who else they might have chosen given the lacklustre performances of English singers in past years.

Engel, as he is called, had two No 1 hits in January and August of 1967 with Release Me and The Last Waltz and Top 10 hits from 1967 with There Goes My Everything to 1969 with a Winter World of Love.

Although not a great fan, I liked the orchestration and arrangements on his records. I just hope the modern arrangers can do the job for us and Engel can be a winner on behalf of this country.
