As we get ready to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, this picture shows the Portsmouth Dockyard gates decorated for the silver jubilee of George V and Queen Mary in May, 1935.

A huge congregation attended a thanksgiving service in the Guildhall Square and in the evening a beacon was lit on Portsdown Hill, one of a chain of such fires that ran right around Britain’s coastline.
