The A3 London Road at Hilsea, Portsmouth, looking south from Portsbridge in 1956.

Northern Parade stretches away to the right and the moat is clearly visible in the foreground as well as the fort-like Bastion restaurant using the old defences for some effective advertising.

Beyond the Bastion is the Southdown bus garage with its later barrel-vaulted extension on the other side of the road behind what is now the Shell garage.

The tree-lined patch of scrubby ground to the left of the roundabout is, of course, now occupied by The News Centre, which opened in 1969.
