Redevelopment of old housing was a dominant theme of Portsmouth’s history in the 1950s and 1960s.

Centre left in this photo, taken in October 1968, are the cleared streets of the Seymour Close and Arnaud Close area of Buckland.

Centre right are the terraced streets of western Buckland and the line of the old northern end of Commercial Road, the last area of Portsmouth to be comprehensively redeveloped rather than improved.
