On July 1, 1937, the railway line from Waterloo to Portsmouth was electrified and at 74 miles it was said to be the longest powered line in the country.

Here the special train with the Portsmouth crest on the front is inspected by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, councillor Frederick Spickernell and other dignitaries.
