Patriotic feeling was high between the two world wars, as shown by this picture of one of Portsmouth’s poorer streets, with simple bunting and decorations strung out to celebrate the silver jubilee.

Father Frederick Dolling’s church of St Agatha can be glimpsed in the background, which identifies the location as Trafalgar Street, Landport.

The street is long gone, but St Agatha’s, of course, still stands.
