A policeman helps two sailor-suited youngsters across the busy junction of Edinburgh Road and Commercial Road, Portsmouth, in 1900.
He was helping them avoid the cyclists and horse-drawn vehicles trundling by at this busy junction.
In the background you can see the doorway of the Empire Palace theatre.
The theatre opened on November 2, 1891, and was designed by opera house architect CJ Phipps.
In 1913 the theatre was completely renovated and renamed the Coliseum with Marie Lloyd topping the bill on the grand reopening.
After the Second World War it was again refurbished and given back its old name.
Sadly it eventually succumbed to the invasion of television and closed in September 1958. A supermarket was later built on the site.
