The death of Ken Russell and the destruction by fire of South Parade Pier in 1974 when he was filming Tommy there, prompted me to dig out this image from the 1930s.

It shows the pier with a ferry boat moored to take on passengers and every seat and deckchair filled on a hot summer day.

This was the second pier to built on the site – the earlier 1879 structure was also destroyed by fire in 1904.
