This 1950s view of Portsmouth Harbour Railway Station from Point, Old Portsmouth, shows Semaphore Tower in the naval base rebuilt in 1913 after a fire.

There’s an Isle of Wight ferry moored at the station landing stage with the masts of HMS Victory above it.

The small boat tied up at HMS Vernon (centre) could well be one of the smaller craft used by the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service.
