Have your say

Local author Andrew Fairley is putting together a book on a dozen boxers who came from Portsea Island.

One who will be mentioned is the great Len Harvey who fought in every weight from bantam to heavy, a feat unsurpassed to this day.

Another who Andrew is interested in is Matt George who was doing the rounds in the 1920s. He was talking to Matt’s son who said his father was the first bus driver to drive a public service bus over Portsdown Hill.

There is no evidence to prove this, but I’m sure there will be someone out there with a bus connection who might know if there’s any truth behind it.

Andrew is also interested in gyms around the town at the time especially a ring in St Paul’s Road, Southsea, and another in Charlotte Street.
