Have your say

Geoffrey Downing sent me this pre-war photo of HMS Hood, which he believes was taken about 1936.

In the bottom right hand corner is his father-in-law’s younger brother Thomas Dagnall wearing his Royal Marines cadet uniform.

Geoffrey says: ‘With all the people waiting to go on the ship, it must be Navy Days.’

Thomas later went on to join the RAF as a gunner/ air crew, but his aircraft and all the crew were lost during the Market Garden campaign at Arnhem in 1944.

Geoffrey says Thomas’s older sister Peggy married a Royal Navy Fleet Chief.

He sailed with the ship to join an international fleet off the Spanish coast during the Spanish Civil War.
