Push ’n’ pull train at Havant

The letter of commendation from the Southern Railway management. It took two months to send it.

NOSTALGIA: We had more backbone during the war

Have your say

Thanks to Terry Bye who tells me the push ’n’ pull train picture at Havant in last week’s column was taken on May 3, 1953.

It was a Stephenson Locomotive Society tour of Hampshire branch lines.

Members had come to Portsmouth on a circuitous route from Victoria and then crossed to Gosport where they picked up the train pictured.

It then set off to Bishop’s Waltham via Fareham and Botley, then returned to Havant via Cosham where they picked up a train for home.
