NOSTALGIA: Home to Portsmouth and a hero’s welcome

Have your say

It is hard to believe all these carriages have now been scrapped.

They are the four-car sets of slam door trains that plied between Portsmouth and Waterloo for the best part of 40 years.

I reckon there are at least 60 coaches on view plus some hiding in the shed and in the sidings in this picture taken at Fratton in 1979.

The most comfortable of trains, I think they are sorely missed on the route today. Yes the modern carriages are air-conditioned, but comfort has been sacrificed.

I am just glad I retired from commuting to London after 30-odd years a short while after the modern trains came into service.
