To complement the Commercial Road photograph, here we see former Southdown bus driver Ernest Arthur Ferrell.
Ernest was always known as Sonny Boy by his colleagues. He worked out of the former Hilsea garage and his daughter tells me that he would be shocked to see the state of the garage today.
Ernest started out as a conductor in 1927 and when war broke out he became a driver. In his later life he took to coach driving. During the war his wife also worked for Southdown as a clippie.
Ernest was also secretary of the Small Bore Rifle Section and ran many social functions.
