The corporation stables could be found in Spring Gardens, just off Guildhall Square, Portsmouth.

They were built in 1877 and catered for all the working horses owned by the corporation including the fire brigade and the city engineer’s department.

The fire brigade also had their station at the front of the block.

Advertising billboards to the right of the stable block advise that you should always demand OXO for ‘general fitness’ and that ‘beer is best’.
