Signal box - The bleak and isolated siting of the Idsworth signal box illustrates the loneliness of the signalman's lot

THIS WEEK IN 1970: Time runs out on the lonely reign of a signal box man

Have your say

In this marvellous shot looking across from Greetham Street in 1929, we see the 2.38pm train to Reading leaving from the High Level.

To the left is the as yet un-bombed original Guildhall and to the forefront are tram lines running along Greetham Street. Behind the water tower is the goods yard, which was replaced by a new yard at Fratton in July 1936.

This itself has been replaced over the past five years by the Fratton Centre.
