Not some far flung island but Port Creek alongside Eastern Road, Portsmouth, earlier this week. I counted more than 50 plastic bottles along with other man-made filth.

The Floral Queen contest was a popular part of the Southsea Show each year.

This picture was taken in 1957. The contestants’ dresses reflect the fashion of the day when narrow waists and mid-calf-length, flared skirts were the in thing, together with the short, soft perm and Louis heels. And several entrants were wearing gloves, the essential accessory to the well-dressed young woman’s outfit.
