The chairmen of the Portsmouth South Conservative Association, Freddie Emery-Wallis said: ‘I am delighted that we have such a person to lead the party.

‘It shows that the Tory party had a modern outlook and we are not as hidebound as our opponents think.

‘I look forward to a very effective leadership.’

Portsmouth North’s chairman N Tomlin was looking forward to working closely with Mrs Thatcher.

Mr Tomlin said: ‘Under her leadership, I am sure we will be successful in electing a Tory MP in Portsmouth North at the general election.’
