The people of Gosport reacted with shock and sadness to news that HMS Dolphin was to be axed.

Residents were stunned by the revelation and many expressed concern at the impact the move would have on the town’s economy.

Walter Higgs, 71, of Whiteley Lane, Titchfield, who was based at Dolphin during the Second World War, said: ‘It’s very sad news, I’ve got some happy memories of the place.

‘It would have a terrific impact on everyone in the area if it closed.’
