A pioneering Portsmouth scheme aimed at steering habitual young offenders away from crime was praised by academics.

University of Portsmouth research showed seven out of 17 children did not commit any crimes during their first six months on the Persistent Young Offenders Project.

Four were charged with fewer offences than before they joined.

Thirty youngsters between seven and 16 took part in the first scheme of its kind in the country.
