On this day in 1979 Portsmouth North voters elected Peter Griffiths as their MP.

He was a Conservative who had fought the inner Birmingham Smethwick seat in the 1964 general election with a controversial campaign and won.

In 1979, he beat the sitting Labour MP Frank Judd in the general election which saw Margaret Thatcher become prime minister and the end of Portsmouth-born James Callaghan’s Labour government – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
