Arts and Crafts on a grand scale

AGHHH! Another one of those awful charity ads...

LETTER OF THE DAY: Ouch! Far too many TV charity ads

Have your say

Many people have become familiar with the Arts and Crafts movement thanks to the number of artefacts that appear on the never-ending television auction shows.

But rather than a piece of pottery or other handiwork, Colin Shairp, of Fine and Country Southern Hampshire, wants to tempt you with something on a much grander scale.

Curdridge Hill at Lockhams Road, Curdridge, is a superb Arts and Crafts house with much decorative external and internal detail that’s typical of the movement. The house is believed to have been built for a merchant seaman and as well as the accepted features of the time also has some sophisticated architectural detail.

‘While it’s very much a house of its time it’s also contemporary in many ways,’ explains Colin. ‘Just as there’s a modern taste for natural woods, so there was when this house was created and great care has been taken to preserve as much as possible.

‘As a result there are the open fireplaces that might be expected, but there are also shuttered glazed doors and windows in the drawing and dining / family rooms that open onto a veranda and overlook the gardens.

‘Two first-floor bedrooms and a dressing room have doors on to a balcony overlooking the formal gardens with their mature trees and shrubs but there’s also a heated swimming pool as well as a restored Victorian summer house.

‘There are six bedrooms, with three on the first floor, where there is a luxurious period bathroom. The main stairs continue to the second floor where there is an en-suite bedroom, cloakroom, a shower room, and two further bedrooms, one with a kitchenette, which gives scope for an annexe or staff quarters. With all that living space and the possibilities for entertaining on a grand scale, the house also has a superbly equipped modern kitchen.’

Located midway between Bishops Waltham and Wickham, the house is also conveniently close to Botley station and has nearby road access to Winchester, Portsmouth, Fareham, and Southampton.

Guide price is £925,000 (EPC Band E).
