Bruce Carpenter, 82, and his wife Angela, 73, retired to Southsea 12 years ago and were living close to the famous Tenth Hole, the world’s oldest pitch and putt golf course. They were living in a five-bedroom Edwardian corner house, with room for all the family, but came to realise that such a large home was becoming a burden.
Keen Pompey fans, the couple, pictured, wanted to stay in Portsmouth and have recently made a move to Churchill Retirement Living’s Summerson Lodge in Milton, as Bruce explains: ‘We loved our previous house and its location by the seafront and the friendly neighbours, but we reluctantly decided it was time to downsize. We looked at smaller houses and apartments but nothing seemed quite right, unless we were prepared to move out of Portsmouth, which we weren’t as we love the city.
‘It was then that we noticed that Churchill Retirement Living were building nearby. We decided to call in, just to have a look. It didn’t take us long to make up our minds, especially with a fair amount of encouragement from the family. We are now enjoying our two-bedroom apartment with a large sitting room, with views looking out over the city, and feel as if we have been here forever.’
Summerson Lodge is a collection of 76 one and two-bedroom apartments, designed exclusively for the over-60s with features such as a 24-hour emergency call system. Prices for a one-bedroom apartment start at £159,950 and for a two-bedroom apartment at £214,950.
