Family fun at Emsworth food festival + picture gallery

FOODIES enjoyed a feast as the jewel in the crown of Emsworth's culinary calendar returned.

Dubbed the Big Feast Weekend, town hotspots were tastily transformed between Friday and Sunday for the pinnacle of the hugely popular British Food Fortnight. 

On Saturday, visitors to Emsworth Community Centre united for an ale of a time as the annual Beer, Cider and Wine Festival made its third outing.

Organised by WemsFest, it boasted a roster of 30 award-winning and local tipples '“ sampled by more than 200 drinkers from Hampshire and beyond.

Fred Bristow, from Bedhampton, was one of many charmed by barley wine Ripper as it made its festival debut '“ hailing from the Green Jack Brewery in the coastal Suffolk town of Lowestoft. 

Measuring in at 8.5 per cent, it was the fixture's strongest '“ but went down a treat for the 73-year-old and his wife Valerie.

'˜This was the first beer I tried this year, but it's so good I've stuck with it all day and had four pints,' he said.

Also a fan was Helen Beevers, from Portsmouth, who has attended the festival yearly since it began. 

The 73-year-old said: '˜The Ripper is lovely. I love this festival because it's a brilliant place to meet friends and have a laugh.' 

In St Peter's Square, Emsworth's community spirit shone through on Sunday for 2018's Apple Pressing Day.

Lots of families went along for the much-loved event which sees their own apples turned into bottled apple juice.

Tom and Marie Stable, from the village, took along their five-year-old daughter Maisie.

She said: '˜I loved it. I picked the apple from our fruit bowl and made yummy juice.'

Marie, 32, said this is the first time they have come after being impressed with Saturday's event.

'˜It is such a lovely event and something different for Maisie to try. There is such a lovely atmosphere.'
