Roast lamb is a traditional Easter dish and so here are three crowd pleasers to go with a family Sunday lunch.

Starting in Spain, Rioja is a great match with lamb and there are some really great values to be found. Tesco Finest Vina Mara 2004, Gran Reserva, Rioja (Tesco, £10, down from £13.99 until April 23) is a lovely example, which is going to appeal to lovers of traditional Rioja.

There are strawberries and gamey flavours all framed in sweet vanilla oak with a nice finish.

It’s very rare that I recommend a wine under £5 but Les Crouzes Old Vines Carignan 2012, Pays d’Herault (Co-op, £4.99, down from £5.99 until April 2) is a really good value red from France. It has juicy cherry and red berry fruits. There’s a touch of herb, so while not overly complex, it is very satisfying.

Domaine Les Grandes Costes 2009, Pic Saint Loup

Staying in France, this is a blend of syrah and grenache with brambly black and red fruits. There are spices and that distinctive twist of Mediterranean herb often found in red wines from the region. There’s also a little oak in the background and a long finish. It’s very impressive and a bargain even at this price.
