It is World Malbec Day on April 17. In the past decade sales of Malbec have soared.
Still found in south-west France, it is Argentina that has become synonymous with this grape. Dark in colour, it makes rich, deep, slightly chocolatey wines that go well with beef and steaks.
The Exquisite Collection Malbec 2013, Mendoza (Aldi £5.99) has loads of juicy dark berry fruit with a touch of spice. Simple but fine and fantastic value. Similar value is Santa Julia Malbec 2013, Mendoza (Waitrose £5.99) which has a little more plum fruit.
Top tipple this week is Catena Malbec 2012, Mendoza (Waitrose £9.74, and Majestic £12.99, two for £9.74). This is more polished and balances power and finesse. There is lots of peppery spice on the nose. Deserves a fine steak.
