Spain may be in the economic doldrums, but its wines are causing much excitement.
While Rioja may still be the first choice for many, there are now other regions which are beginning to be found on many wine shelves, from Ribera del Duero and Priorat for their reds and Rueda for its whites. But this week I’ve tasted M&S’s updated Spanish range and there are some really interesting wines outside of these areas.
Godello 2010, Monterrei (M&S £9.99) is a delicious white from north-west Spain, which is perhaps better known for its Albarino grape. Godello may be less well-known, but produces a lovely, pure dry white with minerals and notes of honey and blossom and a bracing fresh, finish – wonderful with a seafood soup or seafood platter.
Escondite Perfecto Mencia 2009, Bierzo
This has notes of cherries, a little chocolate and some spices from oak ageing. Slow-roasted lamb or a chorizo-flavoured spicy chicken would certainly bring out the best in this tasty red.
