MORE than 600 stores have been affected across the country after fast-food joint KFC was hit by a major shortage of chicken.

A new delivery contract with DHL has sparked shortages across the UK.

The company released an updated list of 296 outlets that were still open as of Monday afternoon - though KFC said earlier in the day that many were offering limited menus or had cut their hours.

It means that about two thirds of its near 900 stores were suffering from the shortage.

According to the KFC website, the Portsmouth stores in North Harbour and Commercial Road are open, as is the store in Lederle Lane, Gosport.

Every other store in the region is closed.

KFC gave no indication of when operations would be back to normal but encouraged diners to check its website in order to find the nearest open restaurant.

In a statement, KFC said: ‘We’ve brought a new delivery partner onboard, but they’ve had a couple of teething problems – getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex!

‘We won’t compromise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed and others are operating a limited menu, or shortened hours.

‘We know that this might have inconvenienced some of you over the last few days, and disappointed you when you wanted your fried chicken fix – we’re really sorry about that.’
