I always know summer is coming to an end when samples of the next vintage of Marlborough sauvignon blanc start arriving.
New Zealand harvests its grapes some six months before Europe and so we are just about to see the 2012 vintage for some white wines arriving on our shelves now. As for the quality of the harvest, it was a long, cool, dry season which should have resulted in concentrated, very good quality wines.
For New Zealand’s most celebrated winemaker, Villa Maria, this all ties in very nicely as it celebrates its 50th vintage.
Marlborough sauvignon Blanc that for most wine consumers is the benchmark for New Zealand wine. You won’t be disappointed with the new vintage.
Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Marlborough
Plenty of passion fruit, gooseberry and limes. Palate is quite concentrated with zingy citrus fruits followed by a long, zesty finish.
