Red knows how to make you smile

Have your say

Emsworth has become the UK’s first official Red Nose Town so I’ve been thinking about wines to make me smile – mainly reds, of course.

Cornelia Red 2013, Swartland, South Africa (£10.99 M&S) is a blend of shiraz cinsaut and mourvedre. Aged in older oak, this is medium bodied with blackcurrant, herbs and a little spice. Perfect with bangers and mash.

Not a wine, but how about a pint of Emsworth’s Blue Nose Comic Relief Ale (Blue Bell Inn, Emsworth, 50p a pint goes to Comic Relief) made by Portsmouth brewery Irving & Co? Full-bodied, deep red ale, it comes in at 4.2 per cent. Donate as you drink.

Top tipple this week is Errazuriz Estate Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Maipo (£7.49 Waitrose, £9.99 Asda, Morrisons). Full-bodied with dark ripe fruits. Serve with a large plate of red nose-shaped meatballs in tomato sauce.
