Sauvingon blanc is not all about the Kiwis

We celebrate Sauvignon Blanc Day on April 24. It started six years ago in New Zealand but it’s not all about Kiwi wines. Here are three to think about.

The first is Cono Sur Reserve Especial Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Casablanca Valley (Waitrose £7.49 down from £9.99). I’m not a great fan of Chilean sauvignon blanc but this works well and is cracking value. Crisp with citrus and minerals notes and a fresh, bright finish. Try with sushi.

If Marlborough is more your style then Villa Maria Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Marlborough (Majestic £14.49, two for £10.86 each; Asda Direct £13.97) is full of ripe passion fruit and gooseberry with a concentrated and zesty citrus fruit palate. Would work well with pan-fried scallops.

Top tipple this week is Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Elgin. One of South Africa’s finest sauvignon blancs, it is produced from vineyards in the cool Elgin region and manages to finely balance New Zealand exuberance and Loire Valley elegance. Waitrose £11.99; £11.59.
