Most supermarkets have a range of ‘reserve’ own-label wines and there are generally a few really well-made wines to be found here.
Tesco has an offer until July 4 with its Finest range – buy four bottles, save 20per cent.
The offer applies to all of this week’s wines and if the wines are already discounted that’s even greater value.
Tesco Finest South African Chenin Blanc, Swartland (Tesco £5.49 on offer) is made by one of the Cape’s most respected wine-makers. This is really fresh with melon, apple and a hint of spice – perfect for al fresco lunches.
Tesco Finest Godello 2012, Galicia (Tesco £7.49) is an interesting take on a lesser-known Spanish white grape, godello. This is very dry with green apple, citrus, minerals and a clean, crunchy finish. Try it with some squid tapas.
Tesco Finest Albarino 2012, Rias Baixas
Another Spanish white and this is one of the real stars in the range - nicely aromatic. Think citrus and peach here with really bright, clean flavours and a juicy finish. Try this with a dish of prawn linguine and a rocket salad. Delicious.
