Paper straws ‘go down a treat’ with customers

Have your say

What wine goes with what food is one of those questions I get asked more than any other. ‘We are having friends round for dinner and serving fishcakes. What wine should we serve?’

Well of course, the answer is first and foremost that you should actually drink what you enjoy. If you want to serve a sweet sherry with your fishcakes that’s fine by me, although obviously don’t invite me round as well! But having said that, what should you drink with that great British classic dish of fish and chips?

At the recent What Food, What Wine Awards, the answer was perhaps somewhat surprising – Champagne. Waitrose’s Blanc de Blancs Brut NV won a special award, the judges noting that while not obvious it was ‘a fantastic, hedonistic match’.

Made from 100 per cent chardonnay, this is a really first-class Champagne. Complex with toasty notes and hints of citrus fruits, followed by a long elegant finish
