Portsmouth Guildhall celebrates its 125th anniversary this month and we asked for your memories of the great building.
Linda Smart, of Melville Road, Gosport, recalls catching the ferry from Gosport every Friday night in the 1950s to visit her mother’s family in Hertford Street.
She remembers one occasion in the 1960s when, after attending a classical music concert for children, she noticed a drum kit being unloaded. When she got home she read in The Evening News that it belonged to Charlie Watts. It was the night the Rolling Stones played the Guildhall.
About the same time her Aunt Dolly bought tickets for herself, Linda and a friend to see Cliff Richard and The Shadows – Linda’s first pop concert.
She later performed on that stage with the Fareham Philharmonic Society in Handel’s Messiah.
