Portsmouth Dockyard workers heading home, but was this at lunchtime or close of play?
David Baynes poses the question because he went to a talk recently at which the editor of the Naval Dockyard Societies’ newsletter asked if Portsmouth’s workers followed the same practice as those at Sheerness, Kent.
Apparently there, in spite of pressures in the Second World War and a good canteen on site, they went home for lunch every day and had, officially, 90 minutes in which to do it!
Any former Dockyard workers have any lunchtime memories? Do let me know.
