HMS Dolphin and its submarines in 1976

This was the scene at HMS Dolphin, Gosport, on a typically busy morning as patrol submarines were kept in tiptop operational readiness.

Gosport was the home of the navy’s first submarine squadron, formed entirely by patrol submarines.

Oberon and Porpoise are the submarines pictured – they were a vital part of the navy’s forces and formed the first submarine squadron at Gosport.

Reg Betts, The News defence correspondent, wrote about the advanced submarines: ‘Just what is possible by the year 2001… or perhaps more realistically, by the year 2076?’
