Regular Remember When contributor Philip Pyke has raided his archive again to come up with a series of pictures of one of Portsmouth’s longest east-west roads.

New Road runs across the city from Copnor Bridge to Kingston Road and has changed immeasurably since these photographs were taken in 1977.

Philip says: ‘The road was a much busier shopping area in those days, but not now.

‘John Fisher Motorcycles, Wheelers timber merchants and The Salutation pub and many other shops and pubs are now all long gone.’

Was there a Portsmouth band which not play the ‘Sally’?

But there are two distinctive features which happily remain – the horse trough and the Mermaid pub
